This open concept house had plenty of potential at the initial purchase – the couple loved the tall ceilings with all the natural light spilling into the house. The upstairs loft was perfect for a home office. But there were some drawbacks too – the kitchen and master bath needed to be redone, and the home had some outdated railings and architectural elements. Also, besides updating the look, one of the primary asks was to have dedicated space for the family dog. The ensuing renovation realized the true beauty of the space, making it the perfect home for this relocating couple.

The overall design theme for the house was “Modern Earth” – a mixture of warmth and sleek. Finishes were chosen to fit the feel and harmony was by using colors and materials from one room to the next. White oak forms the kitchen and bath cabinetry as well as the fireplace surround. Ivory bead appears in the kitchen backsplash and in the pantry cabinetry faces. Oak, warm gray tile, taupe stonework all work together to exude a sense of calm.

The centerpiece of the main floor is the grand stairway and loft, which meant that the railing was a key design element that had to fit in and complement the other finishes. A new Feeney® DesignRail® Custom aluminum railing in Sparkling Champagne with tempered glass infill was chosen to modernize look. The sleek, warm frame and clear glass panels lend light and elegance to this feature. The railing continues up and along the flyover balcony, creating more openness with an elegant design style.

The Sparkling Champagne powder-coated finish has a slight texture which resists fingerprinting and also gives the railing surface some depth and a pleasant feel to touch. The tone fit perfectly with the other design elements. The glass infill opened up the staircase and gave a view all the way from the first floor to the loft’s back wall. This allowed the designer to choose artistic elements that would be viewed from afar as well as up close. And the glass opened up the space even more.

The project ran into an unexpected hitch when the flooring delivery was delayed. The DesignRail® railing installation was literally derailed even though it was ready to go! Luckily, the HGTV team realized they could leaving that part of the build until the last moment. The flooring arrived a week before move in, and the railing was installed quickly, without any issues.

One of the unique aspects of this project was considerations given to the family pet. During the renovation, the designers looked at the area under the stairs and began to wonder how best to use it. Because there was so much area available, they realized they could add a bit of storage and a little retreat for the family dog, Oliver.

The HGTV team used a DesignRail® gate at the entrance to the doggy clubhouse, making it secure. The custom gate used glass to give visibility inside and out, and the frame was powder-coated in the same Sparkling Champagne color as the stair railing, for a cohesive look.

All the hard work paid off when the homeowners got to view the finished house for the first time. Watch the show to see how our DesignRail® helped transform the house for the happy couple, making it more beautiful and inviting. You may watch on:
