Calm with a tinge of buoyancy and vibrance: that’s the mood among color taste makers for 2020. As we head into a new decade, these companies have tapped into the growing desire for a reduction of stress and an optimism that comes from a new age. The boldest predictions for trending colors this year are from Pantone, PPG, Sherwin-Williams, Behr, and Kelly-Moore.
Pantone: Classic Blue
From the Pantone website: “Instilling calm, confidence, and connection, this enduring blue hue highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era.”
Pair Classic Blue with any of the above DesignRail® railing colors: Gray, Green, Taupe, or Cream.
Benjamin Moore: First Light
As the new decade dawns, so does the pale yet vibrant color chosen by Behr, which they claim “is the backdrop for a bright new decade” which will “combine optimism with understatement, a timeless way to lighten up.” Some would say that at the close of the first decade of the 2000s, this might be just what we all need.
Pair First Light with any of the above DesignRail® railing colors: Not a Mellow Yellow, Black, Blazing Blue, or Gray.
Sherwin-Williams: Naval
Another company to lead with a dark blue tone, Sherwin-Williams proclaims boldly: “Come navigate this brave blue world and find a place to hang your stars.”

Kelly-Moore: Sun God
The standout color for this year is Sun God, “a brash brassy yellow bursting onto the scene interrupting white rooms and monochromatic schemes with a statement of personal passion and confidence.” Perhaps better suited for accents rather than a leading shade, Kelly Moore stands by their choice, “I think we’re looking for reassurance and stability in our homes right now.” explains Shannon Kaye, Color Marketing Manger. “And yet, we also feel more emboldened than ever to buck trends and defy definition.”

PPG: Chinese Porcelain
And our final blue of the year, Chinese Porcelain. Another hue that hearkens a pushback to the busy and bother of day to day life. Another pop of brightness amid a sea of calm colors! Fromt he Behr website: “As we enter the next decade, we strive for vibrancy in life and shape it how we choose. As nature’s favorite color, Back to Nature is a restorative and revitalizing green hue that engages the senses and pairs well with other colors both inside and outside your home.”

How They Do It
A lot of research goes into choosing a single color for an entire year. Companies go to great lengths to research home and design trends, as well as putting a finger on the pulse of local and global events.
